Hello youtubers !!!! Welcome to another one of our videos. Today we will discuss a question that a lot of you made to me. I collected a lot of data so we can talk about the professional beekeeping. The study relates to Greece in 2018. In the video we have a lot of details and I would advise you to take notes. Otherwise you can review the video again and again. To be able to do professional beekeeping definitely you need two things. The first is your love for the bees. The second is not to be allergic. If you do not love these bees will not leave you to work with them. If you have an allergy to a small extent maybe in time you will overcome with it. I have friends who were allergic beekeepers and overcome with time. In Greece today we have 23,000 people as beekeepers. Only 2000 have it as their main occupation, while 21 000 have it a secondary employment. I believe that this number is so small because it is very difficult work and requires very large capital. It also requires many years to depreciate the capital. To make this video I used two Greek books. To become a professional beekeeper you should read some books, You’ll need to do some seminars and then proceed on beekeeping. In order to preserve our family through beekeeping will need to have 700 production hives. Beekeeping will not make you rich but it will give you a satisfactory income. But before we become professional beekeepers will have to spend a considerable capital and a few years of our lives. Now we will talk about the numbers. To have 700 productive beehives will need 700 double hives and another 700 single beehives for next year. When do intensive beekeeping at least 50% of our bees die in the same year.
It may be a little more. The 700 double hives costing EUR 25,000. The hives also have some accessories such as feeders and others costing about 20 euros per hive. This means a cost of about 14,000 euros more. The seven hundred single hives that will be needed next year costing together with their accessories 40 euros each. This means a total of 28,000 euros more. To build the foundations for 700 hives will be need 21000 honeycombs upon 0.85 Euro total 18,000 euro. The total cost for these first numbers is 85,000 euros. Moreover, we should buy a few bees from a beekeeper. You will spend approximately 3000-5000 euros in live bees and then you will multiply them yourself. If you decide to get a loan i advise you not to borrow money to buy bees. You can borrow money to buy your equipment. If something goes wrong you will be able to sell even at a lower price. You will also need a truck that costs minimum 10,000 euros. Also you need a lot of different machines (Explains which machines….) to make your job easier, which is conservatively estimated around 15,000 euros. The total initial investment is therefore 115,000 euros. Apart from the money you will need and a storeroom. The warehouse should be as large as one square meter per hive you own. That is at least 700 square meters. This is necessary because each hive has its accessories to be put into storage. The hardest part in beekeeping is not the capital. It is the time you need to become professional beekeepers. I calculate that we need at least five years to learn the original beekeeping. In these five years you will have no income from beekeeping. If you had a salary of 1,000 euros a month then you will not to earn 60,000 euros for five years. Over these five years you will make some mistakes that are costly mistakes. Every year is a major mistake that should not do it again next year. Other costs would have in these five years is transporting the hives and the food for the bees. I have calculated that the transport costs are around 15,000 euros per year. The foods that you consume your hives each year is about 10,000 euros per year. You will also need about 10,000 euros per year for queens in order to maintain 700 hives. The first years it is impossible to know how to produce queens. To be able to produce queens you should first know how to produce honey. According to my calculations the expenses for the five years is 235,000 euros. So the total cost to become professional beekeepers is 350,000 euros. Therefore only 2,000 of the 23,000 beekeeper manage to become professionals. So very few people manage to become professionals. After spending five years and the money let’s see what happens next. The average honey production per hive is 25 kilos per year. This means that it will be produced per year 17,500 kilos of honey. If we put an average wholesale price of € 4 per kilo. Then our income is 87,500 euros per year. Beekeeping of course has additional income from the wax pollen and so on. If we subtract the expenses we remain a net amount of 52,500 euros per year. This means that you will still need six and a half years to make the depreciation. So we will need five years to learn and six and a half years to depreciate, in total 11,5 years. So when we say we will do professional beekeeping means that we give a lot of time from our lives and we can’t step back. But most give up before the first five years. The first five years you will not earn income at all, on the other hand you will spend money instead. The time that you will work over the colonies is three to four months a year. Work in the store is the remaining six months. The first revenues will start to come from the 6th year together with optimism. I’m sure there are other ways of professional beekeeping approach. I showed you my own way. However for me beekeeping is a secondary activity. Beekeeping is a job that gives great flexibility of freedom. The Beekeeper may lay alone a program and a strategy for his colonies. After that you may be able to produce queens and have an extra income. If you enjoy our videos subscribe to our channel. Goodbye!
